Job Description


Job Title:              President and Chief Executive Officer

Reports To:         United Way of Horry County Board of Trustees

FLSA Status:       Exempt


The President/CEO is the leader of the organization, establishing a vision for Community Impact that is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of high-performing leaders, staff and volunteers.  S/he is responsible for the overall impact achieved through United Way.  The President/CEO has unquestioned integrity, a strong sense of accountability, the ability to get things done, wisdom and good judgment, a fair and thoughtful approach to management, and the flexibility and courage to shift direction when needed.  S/he leverages the power of relationships and networks, working across private, public and corporate sectors to improve conditions in the community, and understands his/her role in protecting and growing the trust in United Way and its relevance in the community.

The President/CEO possesses a high level of broad business and management skills and is effective at generating resources and financial support for the organization, increasing its capacity to drive impact.  S/he is dedicated to shared and measurable goals for common good, working with the Board to craft and adapt strategies to achieve increased impact and the funding to support it.  S/he is accountable for building and leading high-performing teams, and has ultimate responsibility for organizational spending, budget compliance, and the mitigation of financial risks.

Relationship Oriented:  Builds and cultivates relationships across a wide spectrum of the community.  Listens to others with respect, and gathers their input and considerations.

Influencer in the Community:  Has a growth mindset, cultivates a network of relationships, and is influential in building interest and passion for positive change in the community.

Resource Developer:  Engages a variety of donor segments, fund-raising strategies, and volunteers to increase resources and funding.

Collaborator:  Is able to bring people together for collaboration to advance the mission.

Results Driven:  Utilizes measurable goals for insuring beneficial results, particularly in the areas of community impact, fundraising, and financial accountability.

Ethical Steward:  Is a careful steward of all of United Way of Horry County’s assets, including its relationships, its monetary and physical assets, and its reputation and brand.

Communicator:  Is able to simplify a very complex organization in a language that people from all levels can understand.  Has excellent written and verbal skills.


  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership, fundraising, and financial experience
