Meet Katie Wise, Director of Community Impact

January 27, 2025 by unitedwayhorry

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Horry County?

I was originally born in Pennsylvania, but I have lived in Horry County for 19 years.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I work closely with our impact staff, including the Early Education Program Manager and three Community Resource Coordinators, to ensure our programs are making a meaningful difference in Horry County. Together, we focus on maximizing our impact while exploring innovative ways to grow and improve. I also collaborate with community partners by facilitating the Horry County Community Collaborative (HC3) and managing grants for nonprofit organizations. Each day is centered on finding the best ways to positively impact Horry County through our programs, investments, and partnerships.

What inspired you to work at UWHC?

I’m really inspired by the chance to work with United Way of Horry County and the difference we can make in our local community. What makes UWHC special is how we can adapt to the changing needs around us, filling in the gaps as the community grows. We focus on getting to the heart of the problem and solving it, instead of just putting a temporary fix on it.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of the job is the collaboration—whether it’s with UWHC staff, nonprofit partners, foundations, businesses, or local government. When all sectors of a community unite and work together, there’s no limit to what we can achieve!

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

Something that people may not know about me is that I just recently had a baby girl in August 2024. Her name is Aubrey and she is the light of my life!

What are your hobbies or activities you enjoy outside of work?

My husband and I absolutely love to travel. We enjoy going to Disney World, Universal Studios, cruising, and visiting different countries. We always like to take one big trip a year with a bunch of little mini-trips sprinkled in!

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?

The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is that no single organization person, organization, or entity can do everything alone. Without collaboration and partnerships, our relationships, organizations, and communities would fail to thrive.

What’s the one way you think Horry County can make a difference together?

I believe Horry County can make a difference by continuing to create stronger collaboration across all sectors—businesses, nonprofits, local government, and residents. By working together, sharing resources, and supporting each other’s efforts, we can tackle challenges more effectively and create lasting change. When we unite with a common purpose, we can build a stronger, more resilient community for everyone.
