Everyone deserves the security of knowing their basic needs will be met. Through collaboration, we work to ensure access to food, shelter, clothing, transportation, and healthcare — building a community that can respond to today’s challenges and prepare for tomorrow.
Every family needs a safe place to live and food on the table.
But the rising cost of these basics is putting added pressure on household budgets. Between 2007 and 2024, housing costs in the U.S. nearly doubled while food costs rose 38%.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures price changes across a broad range of goods and services. The ALICE Essentials Index focuses just on the basics families need every day. Because housing and food make up the largest portions of the Index, they are also the biggest drivers of its increase.
Better data helps communities understand where pressures are greatest — and where solutions can have the biggest impact.

Big news for Horry County's youngest learners! 🎉 HTCincsc - Your Local Internet Provider has announced their continued support for the expansion of our Ready, Set, Kindergarten program for the 2026–2027 school year, growing from Conway Elementary to six schools: Conway, Daisy, Green Sea Floyds, Seaside, Socastee, and St. James.
Only 27% of our Horry County kindergarteners start school ready to learn. This program helps close that gap with Saturday sessions on literacy and language, plus take-home resources for families. In our pilot last Spring at Conway Elementary, 100% of parents said they'd recommend it for rising kindergarteners and their families.
