Give Where You Live and Support Local Residents of Horry County

September 25, 2024 by Heather Downing

YOUR support is essential in writing the next chapter in Anna’s life story, a rising kindergartener in Horry County. Her future is uncertain because she lacks the skills needed to enter kindergarten ready to learn.

Why is this important? Research shows that early childhood experiences and learning have lasting effects, shaping academic outcomes throughout a child’s school journey.

Unfortunately, only 27% of Horry County’s children are ready for kindergarten.

Our teachers report seeing preschoolers who struggle with basic skills—many lack the manual dexterity to use crayons or scissors, don’t know how to hold a book, and have limited social skills. These are critical foundations for success in school and beyond.
The situation is urgent. But you have the power to make a difference.

Your donation to Mission Ready, United Way of Horry County’s kindergarten readiness program, can change lives. This targeted, evidence-based initiative partners with local childcare centers and community organizations to focus on key skills such as reading, social learning and emotional advancement, ensuring children reach essential developmental milestones.

Children who have participated in the Mission Ready program are better prepared for kindergarten than those who don’t have this opportunity.

We need donors like you to expand the program and ensure more children are prepared for a bright educational future. Your support will change the trajectory of their lives.
I hope you will consider supporting United Way of Horry County programs such as Mission Ready, which support residents of Horry County.

When Anna walks into kindergarten on her first day, full of excitement and possibility, it will be because of generous supporters like you.

We need EVERYONE’S support to ensure EVERY child receives EVERY possible intervention to be successful in school. We can’t do it without you. That’s why your gift to United Way of Horry County is urgently needed today.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your compassionate support of struggling children. If you have any questions or need more information, I would love to talk with you. You can reach me at 843-347-1186 or blakely@unitedwayhorry.org.

With deep gratitude,

Blakely Roof

P.S. I’m asking a lot, but I hope you will reflect on this request and give as generously as you can.
