Throughout our history, United Way has done extraordinary work to improve people’s lives and build strong communities.
At United Way of Horry County, we do more than fund programs. We advocate for policies and systems that create lasting change. By using local data, elevating the voices of ALICE households, and partnering with the United Way Association of South Carolina, we work to ensure that families who are working hard can also afford to live, learn, and thrive.
What Advocacy Means at UWHC
- We educate policymakers using local data.
- We elevate the realities facing ALICE households.
- We advocate for policies that strengthen financial stability, health access, early education, and disaster resilience.
- We collaborate with the United Way Association of South Carolina on statewide policy priorities.
- We support nonpartisan civic engagement that strengthens community voice.
Putting ALICE at the Center of Policy
- In Horry County, 41% of households fall below the ALICE threshold.
- ALICE families are working, but wages often do not keep pace with the cost of housing, child care, health care, food, and transportation.
- Data from the ALICE Report helps inform our local and statewide advocacy efforts.
We advocate for policies that:
- Expand access to affordable, high-quality child care.
- Improve access to mental and behavioral health care.
- Strengthen nutrition programs like SNAP, WIC, and school meals.
- Address housing affordability and cost-of-living pressures.
- Support coordinated disaster response for vulnerable households.
