United Way of Horry County (UWHC) has presented the 2023 Hidden Hero Award to Brent Barker. The Hidden Hero Award is given annually to an individual or organization that has gone above and beyond to help UWHC. The Hidden Hero recipient is often not recognized by the public for the work that they complete, but they are dedicated to our mission and diligently work to give back to Horry County.
Brent perfectly represents what it means to be a Hidden Hero for Horry County. As a Manager of Engineering and Fiber Design at HTC, he serves the members of the community and HTC workforce each day. Brent is a model citizen who strives to improve the lives of those around him by donating his time and efforts in various ways, including volunteering for the United Way of Horry County for several years. Most recently, he has served as site leader and coordinated work efforts at the locations he was assigned to oversee.
“Brent is not only an exemplary leader at HTC, but also in the community,” said Ryan Graham, HTC Executive Director of Plant Engineering. “We at HTC are honored to have him on our team and be such a great steward of the Cooperative and the priorities it represents.”
Brent has volunteered and been a part of many Day of Caring projects, but over the past few years, he really stepped up and provided a tremendous amount of knowledge and leadership. For the 2022 Day of Caring at Finklea Community Center, Brent was the leading force in pulling several companies together with the goal of having a full-sized basketball court installed at Finklea.
“Brent has played a huge role in planning, preparation, and leading several of the past Day of Caring events while working closely with our team,” Blakely Roof, President & CEO of UWHC, said. Roof continued, “Without his passion and determination, UWHC would not have been able to complete several larger-scale projects during these events.”
