At United Way of Horry County, one of our impact areas, or causes we focus on, is education. During the COVID-19 pandemic, children were not allowed to go into their schools due to fear of the virus spreading. Many students were falling behind in their academics because they did not have a safe or stable learning environment. Some students had to be left alone at home and didn’t have an adult present to motivate them to complete their schoolwork.
United Way of Horry County recognized this issue and was able to provide rent for the YMCA’s Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) for the entire school year. The VLA was created during the COVID-19 pandemic for kids who’s parents had to work and needed a safe place to learn.
Any child, regardless of payment, was eligible to attend. Approximately 90 students are attending the VLA while receiving supervision and tutoring for their academic subjects. Donate today to make an impact on education in Horry County!
