Cliff’s Story

Meet Cliff.

Cliff has been a client for Neighbor to Neighbor for about eight years and is legally blind.

Driving up to Cliff’s house, you are greeted by a long dirt driveway and front porch with white rocking chairs, after entering his house you hear the sound of a dog barking in the distance and see various framed pictures of his family. Including a picture of his kids when they were younger and a photo of him and his wife on their wedding day. Cliff retired as a vending machine mechanic, once his eyes started deteriorating.

When Cliff began to experience vision loss, he was unsure of how he would get to his doctor’s appointments. A friend told Cliff to dial 2-1-1. A trained referral specialist listened to Cliff’s concerns and was able to refer him to a local free senior ride sharing company, Neighbor to Neighbor.

Cliff now uses Neighbor to Neighbor to get to his doctor’s appointments, about 3 times a month. A majority of his doctor’s appointments are located in Conway and the Surfside Beach area.  Cliff used previous ride programs around the area before, but a lot of them caused him to pay. Neighbor to Neighbor is a free service.

Cliff talks about some of the aspects that he looks forward to the most when he is picked up for a ride by one of the volunteers.

“They are always on time, they take care of me, and they talk to me,” states Cliff.

Cliff recognizes that his vision is not the best and that can lead to him not being treated equally by everyone he encounters.

“A lot of people when you can’t see good they look over you, because they aren’t like you, it don’t matter because Neighbor to Neighbor doesn’t think like that.”

Not only does Cliff cherish the relationships with his drivers, he also enjoys talking to the people that he speaks to in the Neighbor to Neighbor office.

“John he is my driver right now, he is a good man, I love John, um Ms. Sharon, everybody I meet from Neighbor to Neighbor, they good Christian people,” states Cliff.

In his free time Cliff enjoys fishing and has a couple of fish that he has caught hanging in his kitchen varying in sizes.

Cliff knows that Neighbor to Neighbor to someone that he can always rely on.

“If I die first, who would take my wife to the doctor? Neighbor to Neighbor.”

Cliff wants to thank 211 for referring him to Neighbor to Neighbor.
