United to Read is an annual event held in first-grade classrooms in Horry County. In the past, we have recruited over 150 volunteers each year to read the same book to each class. Due to COVID-19, last year’s event was held virtually.
For 2022, we are excited to welcome volunteers back to the classroom to read, Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun: Having the Courage To Be Who You Are by Maria Dismondy. This charming story empowers children to always do the right thing and be proud of themselves, even when faced with someone as challenging as a bully.
Every first-grade classroom in Horry County, whether in school or online, will have a volunteer to read to their class. United to Read is an event that raises awareness of the importance of early literacy and celebrates reading!
Additionally, every volunteer MUST go through a background check with Horry County Schools. On the HCS webpage, please select Volunteer Application. For the school location under additional details, please select United Way of HC. You can complete your background check here.
Students and volunteers had a blast during the 2022 event!
