United Way of Horry County (UWHC) has launched the Thrive Program, the signature strategy for achieving their Bold Goals in self-sufficiency. The purpose of the Thrive Program is to meet individuals and families where they are on their journey to becoming self-sufficient.
In 2023, UWHC created the role of Community Resource Coordinator (CRC) to work one-on-one with individuals and families on their path of self-sufficiency through a Horry County CDBG Grant. After seeing the overwhelming need for services, UWHC decided to expand the role to encompass multiple staff to form the Thrive Program. Through this program, the CRC and Benefits Navigator provides intensive case management by assessing clients’ strengths and needs, making referrals, helping to develop goals, assist in obtaining eligible benefits, and coaching them on their path to financial stability. Currently, 31% of Horry County residents fall under the ALICE threshold. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. This means that even though individuals are employed, they still do not make enough money to pay for their basic needs. An additional 12% of Horry County residents fall at or below the poverty line. The Thrive Program works specifically with these individuals to connect them to crucial resources and help them navigate their path toward self-sufficiency.
UWHC is currently partnered with the City of Myrtle Beach’s Chapin Library to have Benefits Navigator, Kissie Melvin, stationed throughout Myrtle Beach on their Mobile Library at designated stops on certain days. Individuals are also able to access the Benefits Navigator at Bay Pointe Apartments by appointment only. To view a list of dates for the Mobile Library Bus or to make an appointment, visit unitedwayhorry.org/thrive. With support from Ms. Melvin, clients can apply for eligible benefits including SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, and WellVista, and access to identification services, referrals, and more. UWHC looks to add two additional CRCs to continue expanding the program.
The Thrive Program is supported through funding provided by the Chapin Foundation, Bank of America Foundation, Sisters of Charity, and SC Thrive through USDA.
